Room 10's reflections

Room 10 have been working super hard over the past 2 terms! We wrote some reflections about our time learning about enterprise and all the fun things we did! Check it out!

Room 10's Enterprise journey

Wow! What a journey it has been this term with our enterprise. We started by focussing on rubbish and how it effects us. We looked at lots of ways we could help; recycling, reducing, reusing and upcycling. We looked at things we throw away but could use again!
This lead to our fantastic idea to turn old t-shirts into bags. This helps us reduce our use of plastic bags and also reusing something we would usually throw away and upcycle it into something we could use! Have a look at our journey and our final products!

After sewing, we bundled them up in spirals to tie dye!!

We are proud of them!!

Our messages!

Room 10 did a brainstorm of all the messages we wanted to tell the world about recycling to use on our upcycled t-shirts.

Then we used an app called 'Word Photo' to create our messages.
We think they look pretty cool and can't wait to put them on our bags!

Plastic bottle kayaks

We were all lucky enough to have a visit from some enterprising Pakuranga College students. They had an idea to reuse plastic bottles to make kayaks! They told us all about their learning adventure, how important reducing, reusing and recycling is and how they kept trying when things went wrong and persevered in the end!

We were so impressed. Check out their video and some of the photos from our visit!

Too much rubbish

Here are some things that Room 8 thought about to be enterprising about the problem of too much rubbish.

Tuesday 23 July 2013

Room 10 reusing!

We had a big problem in Room 10. We had lots of old, torn books that we didn't want to throw out!  So we decided to be enterprising and come up with a solution.
It was hard to cut up books because we know how to treat them well, but we all decided it was better to give them a second life than to throw them away!
We've been looking a lot at reducing, reusing and recycling things, so we decided to use our collage skills to decorate and old table Miss Ladley had. Check out the photos, we are still covering it so watch this space for completed photos!

Help us reduce!

Room 9 is worried about how much rubbish is going in the landfills so we wrote an acrostic poem about reduce!

Rubbish is bad

Empty bottles can be recycled

Don't dump rubbish

Use things again

Care for our world

Everyone can help!

Sustainable Coastlines

The junior school at Elm Park had a visit from
Riley at Sustainable Coastlines.

I found this really cool website with lots of ideas for recycling for kids games and activities - would love to try some out next term!

Being enterprising at lunch time!

Room 11 children built this fantastic tower at lunchtime today!
They used enterprising skills such as perseverance and initiative because they thought about how would be best to make the tower to make it taller. They used smaller and smaller blocks as the tower grew taller!

Well done room 11!!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Here's a great song about recycling!

Rubbish in the river

Hi all!

Room 10 read a book called Rubbish in the River and saw that rubbish is a big problem!! We did some great thinking or what we saw, why it was like that and what else we wondered. That helped us think of solutions.

We wrote about what we saw:

I can see rubbish and plastic in the river.
I can't see lots and lots of people picking up rubbish.
LW

I can see rubbish and not much water. There would need  to be lots of people to take it out.
 WC

There are no fish.
BM

We wrote about why we thought the river was like that:

I think some people need to pick up their rubbish.
JD

The river was a mess because people threw rubbish all over the river! They are not recycling. They are making bad choices. This is bad for the fish and the water.
EL

Then we wrote about what we wondered and what the solution might be:

Why don’t they use their initiative and pick up the rubbish and take care of the environment?
EL

Why don't people use their green bins? I can see plastic. Why don't people recycle?
WC

How can we help?
Room 10

What great ideas! Why don't more people recycle? How could we help this?

Room 10

We started our enterprise journey by looking at different stories and thinking about how the characters have been enterprising.

We looked at pictures how students at our school have been enterprising. Here are some examples.

Tyre Garden:

Problem:
Garden boring

Solution:
Paint tyres, recycle and create colourful new space for students to enjoy,

Drains:

The whole of Elm Park did an inquiry about where water went and what else went down the drains with it.

The solution they came up with is paint sea creatures and warning signs on the drains like "only water down these drains".

They shared an important message with the school and helped our environment!

We did a define map about what we thought enterprise was after we read some great stories about people being enterprising. Here is what we came up with so far!

This is how room 10 can be enterprising:
